Terms:                                  1.5 hours per week; Tuesdays from 2:00pm – 3:30pm

Scope

Responsible for leading an English conversation circle once a week, during which the volunteer facilitates discussions on everyday topics of interest to the participants.

 

Responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive atmosphere
  • Prepare conversation topics - bring prompts, articles, or questions suited to the group’s interests and language level
  • Tailor the session to the group’s skill level and cultural background
  • Engage participants in conversational style learning and encourage participation
  • Manage dialogue and keep conversation flowing
  • Facilitate sessions, ensuring participant confidentiality and conversations remain respectful
  • Provide participants with insights into Canadian culture
  • Give constructive feedback to participants

 

Qualifications

  • Fluent in English
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience interacting with adult learners
  • Experience teaching English to newcomers to Canada
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to the needs and issues facing newcomers
  • Punctual and responsible
  • Fluency in additional languages is an asset

 

Other requirements

  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check
