Terms:                            Monday-Wednesday 9:30am-2:00pm (in person), Thursday-Friday 10:00am-12:00pm (online)
                                        Minimum commitment of 3 months

Languages:                    Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Somali, Mandarin, Cantonese

Scope

To assist students in the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program. Assist the class instructor to support low-level students who require additional support in language acquisition.

 

Responsibilities

  • Learn and understand the agency's mission and objectives. Carry out volunteer work according to the agency program expectations.
  • Provide individual and small group support to LINC students
  • Follow LINC curriculum guidelines while working with LINC students
  • Help the LINC Instructor obtain suitable instructional materials (online resources, visual and audio aids)
  • Be aware of cultural differences and ensure that the rights of all students are respected 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • TESL Ontario Certificate considered as a strong asset
  • Experience teaching and/or tutoring ESL students, especially in beginner level classes would be an asset
  • Knowledge of Canadian Language Benchmarks and LINC Curriculum Guidelines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and issues facing newcomers
  • Punctual and responsible
  • Quick learner and flexible

 

Other requirements

  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check
